چکیده

A generalized relation is presented to correlate liquid–vapor surface tension with viscosity, both for pure compounds and mixtures. Plots of different data sets verify that the natural logarithm of the surface tension is linear with the reciprocal viscosity, with slope-dependent on the molecular weight and constant intercept for n-alkanes with chain length greater than n-C10H22. For these, the value of the intercept can be related to the surface tension at the temperature of homogeneous nucleation, where the reciprocal viscosity tends to zero. The relations found for the slope and intercept of pure components are also shown to be valid for mixtures, so that only a viscosity (or surface tension) value is required to calculate a surface tension (or viscosity). Some distillation cuts from crude oils of different origins were also presented. Although the linear relation is still valid, the proposed correlations for the slope and intercept of n-alkanes cannot be used, confirming that mixing rules and family specific correlations are required for fluids containing components of different families. The results presented on this work show how bulk transport and equilibrium surface properties can be interrelated. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface Tension Prediction of n-Alkanes by a Modified Peng-Robinson Equation of State Using the Density Functional Theory

Through this study, the ability of a modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) equation of state in predicting the surface tension of n-alkanes based on the density functional theory approach was investigated and compared with other studies. The interfacial layer thickness and the density profile were calculated simultaneously at different temperatures from triple point to near critical point using the modi...

Corresponding-States Modeling of the Speed of Sound of Long-Chain Hydrocarbons1

Models based on the corresponding-states principle have been extensively used for several equilibrium and transport properties of different pure and mixed fluids. Some limitations, however, have been encountered with regard to its application to long chain or polar molecules. Following previous studies, where it was shown that the corresponding-states principle could be used to predict thermoph...

Surface tension of pure heavy n - alkanes : a corresponding states approach

The surface tension of heavy n-alkanes is a poorly studied subject. Few data exist and the predictive methods used for their estimation are rather complex or show considerable errors for the higher members of the series. In this work, the corresponding states theory is used to predict the surface tension of the series of the n-alkanes. Two approaches have been followed: the first is a second-or...

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory

By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT)  based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

Topological structure on generalized approximation space related to n-arry relation

Classical structure of rough set theory was first formulated by Z. Pawlak in [6]. The foundation of its object classification is an equivalence binary relation and equivalence classes. The upper and lower approximation operations are two core notions in rough set theory. They can also be seenas a closure operator and an interior operator of the topology induced by an equivalence relation on a u...
